How Does the Gray Design Building Operate?
The College of Design provides every student with a dedicated desk and studio workspace. Students are encouraged to personalize their space in ways that support their individual workflow while respecting the shared studio environment. Maintaining consideration for others and contributing to a collaborative atmosphere helps foster creativity and productivity. To ensure the studio remains an effective communal workspace, all students are expected to follow the established rules and expectations.
Do and Dont's

- ✓Do check out items from the fablab and return them.
- ✓Do throw away food and trash - This is a communal space where you are responsible for maintaining your space

When something in the building needs attention
For a routine, non-emergency building problem, go to the front desk or send the report to Lakesha Ferguson. A clear description helps staff locate the problem and decide what is needed. Include:
- Where: the floor, room number if available, and a nearby landmark. “The outlet beside the east pin-up wall” is more useful than “the studio outlet.”
- What: what you observed, when it began, and whether it is constant or intermittent.
- Impact: what activity is affected and whether other people or spaces are affected too.
- A photo, if safe: show the location and the problem without including unrelated people or personal information.
- Earlier report: include any existing request or message so staff can connect the information.
Use the emergency guidance below for urgent hazards. A routine report to the front desk or Lakesha is not a substitute for emergency assistance.
Before arranging a move, display, or large project
Talk with your instructor or College facilities staff before committing to work that needs shared space, furniture movement, installation, delivery, or storage. Bring a short description with:
- The purpose of the project or event and who is coordinating it.
- The proposed location, dimensions, and number of people involved.
- Delivery, setup, use, and removal dates.
- Any equipment, power, installation, or staff assistance needed.
- Where materials will be kept and who will remove them and restore the space afterward.
Agree on the arrangement before moving furniture or bringing in a large delivery. If fabrication is involved, also use the FabLab project-planning guide.
