Why Layers Matter:
Layers in Rhino are like a filing system for your geometry. They control visibility, editability, appearance, and ultimately determine how organized and professional your file is. A well-layered file can be understood by anyone, edited efficiently, and prepared for different outputs (rendering, fabrication, documentation).
Layer Panel Interface:
- Access: Layers tab in the sidebar or press F7
- Current Layer: Checkmark indicates active layer (new objects go here)
- Eye Icon: Toggle visibility
- Lock Icon: Prevent editing (objects remain visible but unselectable)
- Color Swatch: Default color for objects on this layer
- Material Column: Assign rendering materials by layer
- Print Width: Control line weight for technical drawings
- Print Color: Override display color for printing

Document Units Setup:
Access: File → Properties → Units
Key Settings:
1. Model Units:
- Millimeters - Standard for product design, jewelry, 3D printing
- Meters - Architecture, urban planning
- Inches - US construction, woodworking
- Feet - US architecture
2. Distance Display:
- Decimal - 25.47mm
- Fractional - 1 1/32"
- Feet & Inches - 5'-6 3/4"
- Precision: Number of decimal places (typically 2-4)
3. Absolute Tolerance:
- Critical setting for model accuracy
- Determines when Rhino considers points "the same"
- Affects Join, Boolean, and Make2D operations
Recommended Tolerances:
- Millimeter models: 0.01 to 0.001
- Meter models: 0.001 to 0.0001
- Inch models: 0.0001 to 0.00001
- 3D Printing: Match printer resolution (typically 0.01mm)
- CNC Machining: 0.001mm or tighter
- Architecture: 1mm is often sufficient
4. Angle Tolerance:
- Default 1.0 degree usually sufficient
- Tighten for precise mechanical assemblies
- Affects surface tangency and continuity
Grid Settings:
Access: File → Properties → Grid
Configure:
- Grid line count: Number of lines from origin
- Minor grid lines: Subdivisions between major lines
- Major grid lines: Bold lines every N units
- Snap spacing: Grid snap increment
- Grid extents: How far grid extends
Best Practices:
- Match grid to common dimensions in your design
- Use 5mm or 10mm for metric product design
- Use 12" or 1' for architectural work
- Adjust per viewport if needed
Template Management:
- Save configured units/tolerance as template
- File → Save as Template
- Include standard layers, annotation styles
- Create templates for different project types
Dimension Tools:
Linear Dimensions:
DimAligned - Parallel to points selected
DimHorizontal - Force horizontal
DimVertical - Force vertical
DimRotated - At specified angle
DimOrdinate - From common baseline
Radial/Angular:
DimRadius - Radius of arc/circle
DimDiameter - Full diameter
DimAngle - Angle between lines
DimArc - Arc length
Dimension Style Configuration:
Access: File → Properties → Annotation Styles
Key Settings:
- Text Height: 2.5-3.5mm for millimeter models
- Arrow Style: Arrow, Dot, Tick mark
- Arrow Size: Proportional to text (typically 0.7×)
- Extension Lines: Offset from geometry (0.5-1mm)
- Text Gap: Distance from dimension line
- Precision: Match model tolerance
- Prefix/Suffix: Add units, symbols (R for radius, ⌀ for diameter)
Creating Custom Styles:
- Duplicate existing style
- Rename descriptively (e.g., "Fabrication_Dims")
- Adjust all parameters
- Set as current for new dimensions
Text Annotations:

- Rich text with
RichText command

¶ Before you hand a file to someone else
Prepare the file so another person can understand what is current, what the dimensions mean, and what you need them to do.
- Save a working checkpoint. Keep the editable project and important construction geometry before making a submission copy.
- Identify the intended result. Say whether the file is for feedback, a drawing, rendering, laser cutting, or 3D printing. The right output depends on its purpose.
- Make the current geometry obvious. Use clear layers and separate the intended output from studies, reference objects, duplicates, and earlier versions.
- Check units and a known dimension. Write down the units and one expected overall dimension. After exporting, reopen or import the output in a separate file and check that dimension again.
- Distinguish full-size design from a physical model. Keep the full-size design intact. If you create a scaled fabrication copy, name it clearly and record its intended finished dimensions.
- Include dependencies when needed. If a collaborator needs to edit or render the project, include the relevant linked images, textures, and references rather than assuming the main file contains everything.
- Give the handoff a clear name. Include the project, part or sheet, and revision so people can distinguish it from an earlier submission.
Changing the units in Rhino can prompt you to scale the geometry. Read that choice carefully and verify a known dimension afterward. See McNeel's units guidance.
For fabrication, also follow the current preparation instructions for laser cutting or 3D printing. An organized file still needs the checks required by its intended process.
A short note to send with the file:
This is revision __ of __. It is intended for __. The file units are __, and the finished output should measure __. The current geometry is on __. I need help with / would like feedback on __.
